Pumpkins, Potatoes and Premiers: Introducing the Fall Farmers Market

If you live in Florida, you may be wondering what the word “fall” really means. Leaves changing colors? …Not here. Temperatures dropping? …Probably not. A season filled with pumpkin-flavored everything, however? Definitely yes.

Here in the Sunshine State, we like to participate in the festivities just as everyone else does. It’s only fair, right? Right. Therefore, we embrace the pumpkin-spiced lattes in our arctic-like, air-conditioned apartments, wear boots and sweaters in 90 degree weather, and pretend that the changing of seasons is upon us! Why shouldn’t we?

The members of Food Activists Revolutionizing Meals bring you a new way to embrace autumn in spite of the humidity and never-ending sunlight: pumpkins, sweet potatoes and the premier of the fall farmers market!

For the last few years, we have been putting on the market once per month during the spring semester. This year, however, we are proud to introduce the market every other week this fall! Our first market was on Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on campus, and the remaining fall markets will be held the first and third Tuesday of each month.

Some of our members harvested sweet potatoes from Friendship, Farms & Fare in New Port Richey, FL and sell them at the market.

In addition to the potatoes, we were also able to sell pumpkins from Bearss Groves.

Overall, we are satisfied with the premier of our fall markets, and we look forward to the continuous growth they will experience as we move into 2015. We are still looking to add vendors, so if you are interested, please feel free to contact us at farm.usf@gmail.com. Thank you to those who attended the market; we appreciate your support!
